Artist in Residence Program

Supporting Art in Louisville

The Galt House Hotel is pleased to introduce the first Artist in Residency program for the hotel. This unique program brings artists from Louisville, its surrounding areas, and even worldwide to the hotel for guests and visitors to experience the artistry that Louisville has to offer.

The city of Louisville has always embraced the traditional artwork and artisanal craftworks that her citizens have created. Over time, Louisville has become a quiet cultural mecca for emerging artists and craftsman to showcase their exciting and exceptional works of art.

The artist in residence program is an opportunity for the Galt House Hotel to bring art in its many forms directly to the many national and international visitors that visit the hotel. The artist’s studio space is located in the main corridor of the hotel, allowing guests and visitors to have a personal opportunity to meet the artists and watch them create.

Visual artists of all mediums are encouraged to apply for this distinctive program. It is the hope that while in residence, the artist will find opportunities to use the Galt House as a source of inspiration for the many pieces that they create during their tenure. At the end of the residency, the artist will gift a signature legacy piece of their artwork to the hotel as a piece of their artistic legacy.

Our first Artist in Residence is Gibbs Rounsavall, a Louisville-based geometric abstract painter. He was featured as one of 13 artists in Louisville Magazine's "13 Artists You Need to Know Now" issue. In 2018, he was named the first Artist in Residence at Syndicate Design and had work permanently installed in the new Kentucky International Convention Center. His work has been included in academic presentations on subjects from abstract art to urban climate change. He has appeared in print, radio and online interviews and feature articles.

Rounsavall's public art mural in the Shelby Park area of Louisville was the focus of a short documentary film and has been used as a backdrop in numerous films and still photography, becoming a destination in Lousville and ranking as one of the most "Instagrammable" spots in the city.

Rounsavall earned his BFA from Washington University in St. Louis and his MAT from the University of Louisville. His work can be found in public and private collections worldwide. He lives in Louisville, Kentucky with his wife and two daughters.

The public is invited to meet the Artist in Residence at the Meet the Artists in Residence Reception during the Republic Bank Friday Trolley Hop on June 7 from 5pm-7pm. A reception will be held outside the Artist in Residence studio on the third floor of the hotel in the west tower.
