Taste of Derby Festival
5:30 PM 8:30 PM What’s better than sampling some of Louisville’s best dishes and helping a worthy cause? Not much. Perhaps that’s why each year the turnout increases for the Derby Festival “Taste of Derby Festival,” which will be held this year on Wednesday, April 9. All proceeds from the event benefit the Dare to Care Food Bank (contact Dare To Care by calling 502-966-3821). Start planning NOW to attend this spectacular event at Louisville Slugger Field. This is the 16th year for the Taste of Derby Festival event (and 28th year as a Taste event that supports Dare to Care Food Bank), which features signature dishes from more than 65 of Louisville’s finest restaurants and beverage companies. There is also a bourbon tasting, a Bloody Mary Contest, wine tasting and a silent auction. The Taste of Derby Festival has the feel of an upscale cocktail party, but it’s open to the public – as long as tickets are still available. The participating restaurants will offer a selection of signature appetizers, entrees and dessert items. Some of the liquor vendors will feature small-batch brands not commonly available. A Silent Auction returns to the event offering unique items from generous donors. All proceeds benefit the Dare to Care Food Bank. Tickets are $80 ($50 is tax deductible). http://discover.kdf.org/taste-of-derby-festival/

(Those who will proceed to the Finals are those hitting closest to the hole, filling the remaining spaces of the 56 total Finalist positions.) There will be 56 positions available at the Finals, so there is a lot of opportunity. (Hold that thought: you don’t get the million unless a hole-in-one is made in the actual Finals…but not bad for a day’s work.) If there is not a hole-in-one at finals, the closest to the hole will receive $5,000. The qualifier shot is 100 yards for everyone. The finals shot is 150 yards for men and 135 yards for women. http://discover.kdf.org/stock-yards-bank-1-million-dollar-hole-in-one-golf-contest/

Great Steamboat Race
4:30 PM 7:00 PM 4:30 PM – 5:30 PM: Boarding 5:30 PM: Departure 6:00 PM: Race Begins Watch from the shore of the Ohio River from Downtown Louisville to Six-Mile Island. The Derby Festival made some significant changes to the format of the Great Steamboat Race in 2009, including the addition of the Belle of Cincinnati as the opponent for the hometown vessel, the Belle of Louisville. The Belle of Cincinnati replaced longtime rival, the Delta Queen, in this racing tradition on the Ohio River. Now, instead of the event winner being determined by the first boat to cross the finish line at the Clark Memorial Bridge, the winner of the event is the vessel that accumulates the most points from performing a series of five tasks assigned to each competitor throughout the day and during the race. One of the tasks is a Calliope Contest between the two Belles; other tasks are performed by the boat crews on-board, as well as onshore. Each boat is assigned two judges, in addition to an overall event judge from the Derby Festival. The winner of the event will be awarded a set of silver-plated antlers to replace the traditional gilded antlers that were presented to the winner in the past. The Awards Ceremony will take place immediately following the race at the Chow Wagon in Kroger’s Fest-a-Ville on the Waterfront. Tickets for the Belle of Louisville (while still available) cost $130 and include food and drinks; Belle of Cincinnati tickets cost $55 (includes dinner). Four Roses Bourbon will be providing a special bourbon tasting on the Belle of Cincinnati; tickets cost $75 (includes food, cruise, and bourbon tasting). Passenger tickets for both boats may be purchased by calling (502) 584-FEST. The Belle of Cincinnati will be competing in the Derby Festival’s Great Steamboat Race for the eighth time – she had previously participated in four consecutive years, beginning in 2002. The Great Steamboat Race was first held in 1963, with the Delta Queen capturing the inaugural contest on the Ohio River. The race series between the two historic vessels ended in 2008 with the hometown Belle of Louisville finishing with an overall record of 22 wins versus the Delta Queen’s 20 victories. The race was canceled once in 1967 and rescheduled in 1966, 1983 and 2011 due to high water. Three other boats have won the event – the Julia Belle Swain in 1976, the Natchez in 1982 and the Spirit of Jefferson in 1999. Tickets for the Belle of Louisville cost $130 (includes food and drinks, and entertainment). Belle of Cincinnati tickets cost $60(includes cruise only). Once again, Four Roses Bourbon will be providing a special bourbon tasting on the Belle of Cincinnati; tickets cost $80 (includes food, cruise, and bourbon tasting).
