GALT HOUSE HOTEL TO INDUCT 1971 KENTUCKY DERBY WINNING JOCKEY FROM VENEZUELA INTO ‘GALLOP TO GLORY’ TRIBUTE

Ceremony celebrating 2009 honoree slated for 11AM on Wednesday

What:
Galt House Hotel continues its one-of-a-kind Derby-week tradition this Wednesday with the induction of yet another Kentucky Derby winning jockey into the hotel’s Gallop to Glory tribute. The public and media alike are invited to join in a Derby-related ceremony and event unlike any other in Louisville. This year’s inductee is Gustavo Avila who rode Canonero II to victory in the 1971 Kentucky Derby. (Please see the accompanying bio on Gustavo Avila for additional details on his storied horse-racing career.)

Galt House unveiled Gallop to Glory in May of 2005. Inspired by Hollywood’s “Walk of Fame,” all Kentucky Derby winning jockeys are invited to preserve their handprints in cement blocks, which are then placed around a life-size fiberglass horse from Louisville’s ‘Gallopalooza’ public art display. As a special touch, local artist Craig Kaviar designs unique roses, made of steel, to compliment each jockey’s handprints. Each year, the newest winning rider’s handprints will be added to the tribute in a public ceremony, and kept on permanent display outside the hotel’s main entrance for all to enjoy.
